Anne Hansen, of Victoria, BC — known as the Oystercatchergirl — has been struggling to keep pace with worldwide demand for oystercatcher art since 2007.
When Anne first moved to Victoria she was immediately taken with the black oystercatcher, and proceeded to paint dozens of artworks on that theme. She was a regular feature in the James Bay Art Walk and the Oak Bay Studio Tour.
In the summer of 2021, in the wake of the BC government’s destruction of the province’s ancient forests, she has embarked on an “Emily Carr” series of paintings.
“Many people’s first introduction to BC is through the haunting forest paintings of Emily Carr. I am convinced that if she we alive today, she would be protesting the destruction of the forests with the rest of us,” says Anne.
Anne grew up in southern Ontario, in a birding and outdoorsy family. She was an administrative assistant at the University of Toronto for 25 years, and was known for her urban bike activism.
