ANNE “Oystercatchergirl” HANSEN: A different species of wildlife artist (Victoria, BC, Canada)<\/h2>\n

Anne Hansen<\/strong>, known for her Oystercatchers <\/em><\/strong>series, took an artistic side-trip in June 2021. She embarked on her “Emily Carr” series of protest paintings against the BC government’s wholesale destruction of the province’s old-growth forests. Below is her famous poem, submitted to the Emily Carr 150 Poetry Contest<\/em><\/strong> in November 2021.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

RED CEDAR WORTH MORE STANDING<\/mark><\/strong>\nby Anne Hansen\n(An earlier version of this poem was submitted to the Emily Carr 150 Poetry Contest,<\/em><\/strong> Victoria, BC, November 2021)\n\nIt\u2019s a horrible sight to see a tree felled.\nThe fairy creeks of my time have all gone to the money barons.\nWhat would Lone Cedar<\/em><\/strong> look like now, or \nForest, British Columbia <\/em><\/strong>or \nA Rushing Sea of Undergrowth<\/em><\/strong>?\n\nLook at our BC premier today, chainsaw for a brain.\nEven a lobotomized amoeba is smarter than that fool.\nIt doesn't take a genius.  Red Cedar<\/em><\/strong> is worth more standing.\nMost men are very stupid.<\/em> <\/strong> Their money spoils it all.\n<\/strong><\/em>\nLittle Emily \u2014 me \u2014 old soul, born in a snowstorm in 1871.\nThey could never domesticate me.  Now an old hag, 150 years on.\n\nMy, how time flies when you\u2019re rolling over in your grave!\nForever twisting this way and that, like an ancient cedar in a Ucluelet storm.\nHow can I sleep, when an enemy circles, dying to kill every square inch of\nMy lover the forest.  Death of a thousand cuts.\n\nHeaven up here.  A house of all sorts.<\/em><\/strong>\nHundreds and thousands <\/em><\/strong>of deadbeats and layabouts.\nTenants with their petty grievances, tedious as art society tea at the Empress.\nThis old lady landlady feels an eviction notice coming on.\nIt's from Mother Nature to all of us.\n\nWake-up time!  It\u2019s 2021 already.\nHeaven help the baby born this summer.\nForests charred, half the province on fire, whole towns aflame,\nAn inferno of cadmium orange and carbon black.\n\nDear Mother Earth,<\/em><\/strong> Emily here:\nGod save our art, the animals, the coast, the seasons, the forests\nand all the unceded and stolen land.\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n\n
